I’m not going to call it common, but I think there is far more “shill” betting going on than considered. I don’t know if that’s the correct adverb there, but basically I see suspicious bids that I would wager are made on a fake account by the seller or the seller’s friends in order to pump up the interest or bump it to reserve. Or, bump it to an imaginary reserve on an alleged “no reserve” auction.
I forgot which car it was... I think it was another fake — eer, replica — Cobra was auctioned off at no reserve, and the top bidder turned out to be the owner of the car. His move was to prevent it from selling too cheaply, even though it was no reserve. The actions were defended by some as “protecting his investment” and that “this happens all the time.” It’s corrupt, is what it is. They banned that account (I suspect he has another), but the seller got a finger-wag even though he was potentially in on it.
But that’s HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars on the line. I’ve been noticing dubious bets on sub-20k cars, on auctions where there’s been no activities for days and suddenly someone who made an account two hours ago triples the previous bid even though there appears to be no real interest in the vehicle with one or two days left on the auction.
I don't know... I love the pornographic photography and seeing cars that I've never even heard of, but there seems to be a little bit of... [Pantomimes "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil"] ... lurking around. Maybe I'm paranoid.

Rich people gonna try to get richer. I appreciate your insight. Pretty much the entire concept of BaT was always going to Foster this sort of attitude, and my only regret is that I'm not rich enough for it to affect me.

Yeah there’s needs to be HEAVY fines for this kind of stuff.
Yeah it’s hard to catch but when it is caught it should be punished. More than just a suspended, or banned account.

Remember when Bring a Trailer was a website that shared links to craigslist and ebay listings for cool cars and projects? That was pretty cool.

I ‘member. I finally unsubscribed from their daily emails when the auction listings got so long that they bumped the actual BaT posts off the bottom, forcing me to open the email in the browser to see it all. I guess business is good for them but I miss those old BaT emails, having been a subscriber for more than 5 years.

I like to think the owner gets what’s coming to him if he has to buy his own car with all the listing fees etc. I don’t know much about BaT, but I hope it bakes in enough headaches to be a karmic punishment even if they don’t catch the shenanigans.
And the people who condone the behavior are just broadcasting that they have no ethics and shouldn’t be trusted.

“ my only regret is that I’m not rich enough for it to affect me.”
I felt that. Ouch.

What do you mean? Nothing sketchy to see here at all. Such a venue could never be used to launder money or similar malfeasance.

They would get them coming and going with both the listing fee and the buyer’s premium (authorized on your credit card when you bid), but on a high-dollar collectible it might be worth it to somebody to eat those fees to save a sale at a low price.

That one still boggles my mind. I called my dad after that car “sold” for $310. His rust bucket race car is probably worth north of 20k. And my original’71 driver could be a 50k car if the values hold. Shit I could sell if for a Ford F-250.

If we have a few more data points like that, you won the lottery my friend.
I’d love to know more about the actual purchaser. I suppose it could be a drunk/egoistic techdork/hedgefunder/vulture capitalist type, but I dunno.

Y eah it is kind of weird, it’s not a 432 or anything, it’s pretty rare to have a low miles unrestored series 1 S30 but that is 3X what I could even expect.

Yeah I don’t want to sell my 71 but it’s nice to know original matching number cars might go up in value pretty well.

Yeah, I know we are in a bubble/1928 part II with some of this stuff, 100K wouldn’t have made me stare too hard, but 300K buys a lot of car even these days.
I am not too aged, and I remember when you could buy 300SL roadsters and all manner of vintage Porsche and Ferrari for that money.

BaT doesn’t charge based on sale price though, just flat fees, unless it’s a premium listing, then it not sure how they handle it, but that’s the big draw to BaT is you can list a high end ride and not get raped like you do at Barret Jackson or the like.
